Bulletin Insert for Sunday, March 5, 2023:
The following information will be placed within the bulletin this coming Sunday. Feel free to read ahead. To see the image, go to: Maslow's hierarchy of needs - Wikipedia

In 1942-3 Psychologist Abraham Maslow studied how humans react to the world around them and created a triangle showing what he calls our hierarchy of needs. Maslow taught that; physical, ego/emotional, spiritual and self-preservation are the foundational categories for life on earth. Without these needs being satisfied, we will likely cease to exist.

Most of our energy & time is spent satisfying the needs in the level where we are. When satisfied, we move on to the level above and so on as we go about our lives.

Jesus says that we (his followers) are blessed when we focus upon our relationship with God as we live our lives.  That would mean we are to focus upon Christlikeness in every level of our existence. Matthew 5:6 states: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.”

When we receive Jesus as Savior, we are called upon to strive toward living a Christlike lifestyle. Herein is satisfaction of life on earth and it becomes lifestyle evangelism.

Temptation to sin is a daily struggle. When we sin, we fall short of God’s ideal. Satan tempted Jesus to fail.  Let’s not think for one moment that we won’t be tempted to fail.  When we give in to temptation and commit sin, and often as a result, the people we encounter will not believe our testimony about the Lord.

Satan knew just where to start with Jesus and moved up through human needs as he pressed him to fail on each level. There really are only 4 categories that sin falls under.  Satan used all 4 on Jesus. Hebrews 4:15 says: “15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weak-nesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.” Also, see 1 Corinthians10:13 All temptation is common to us all. God will provide a way to escape.

Matthew 4 & Luke 4 record how Satan tempted Jesus to fail in 3 of the categories of human existence. Watch how he works through physical, ego/emotional and spiritual.

Jesus ’s first temptation is on the Physical level: “Turn these stones into bread.” Satisfy your physical needs. Jesus resisted by quoting scripture. Deuteronomy 8:3 “…Man shall not live by bread alone.” Turning the molecular structure of stone into bread would collapse the world. Everything God created would be destroyed in satisfying one meal.

The second temptation is on the Ego/Emotional level…. I can make you a super hero so everyone will bow down to you. All you have to do is sell out to me.  Jesus resisted by quoting scripture. Deuteronomy 6:13 13 You shall fear only the Lord your God; and you shall worship Him and swear by His name (NASB)

Satan catches on quickly and changes his tactic. He starts quoting scripture to Jesus as he moves into the spiritual level trying to get Jesus to fail.

The third temptation is on the Spiritual level. “See if there really is a God.”  Throw yourself off this high place and just see if God will do what it says in the Psalms… “He will command angels to guard you.”  Psalm 91:11-12 (KJV) Jesus resisted by quoting scripture. Deuteronomy 6:16 “16 Do not put the Lord your God to the test…”

Matthew and Luke reverse categories two and three, but the temptation is the same. Luke records that Satan left Jesus “for a more opportune time.” Let us learn this lesson: study, know and apply the Bible to our lifestyle because temptation to sin is coming!

Self-preservation at the expense of others is the 4th category of temptation to sin. Satan tempted Jesus one last time in Matthew 16:21-23.  This is the reason for the Luke 4:13 statement: “13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.”  Satan uses Jesus’s friend Peter to tempt Jesus into short circuiting the path to the cross as Peter says: “I won’t let that happen to you!” Jesus said: “Get the behind me Satan.”  Jesus knew that Satan was using one last ditch temptation (peer pressure) to stop him from being the Savior for mankind.

Jesus was tempted in all ways like we are and he resisted the temptations. He won the battle for our soul when he went to the cross and then his Father resurrected him from the grave.

We can overcome temptation rather than commit sin if we search for the escape. Let us
memorize scripture to quote to ourselves when we are contemplating committing a sin.

Please understand that resisting temptation and staying away from sins of the flesh is not for our salvation’s sake.  Salvation is God’s gift for accepting Jesus as our savior (Ephesians 2:8-9). We are to resist temptation so that when we share the story of our salvation, people believe in Jesus because they see what He has done for us. 2 Timothy 2:15 Study the Bible, apply it to life, resist temptation and present Christ to the world.
